OCULAR-II system |
A hierarchical optoelectronic parallel processing system OCULAR-II (Optoelectronic Computer Using Laser Arrays with Reconfiguration-II) has a multi-layer architecture that eliminates the data transfer bottleneck between LSI chips by reconfigurable free-space optical interconnections. The optical interconnection is integrated into a compact module where a spatial light modulator and an imaging optical system are compactly fabricated. Each component of the system has been designed to have modularity as well as compactness so that the overall system could be extended by just cascading each module being a building block. The algorithms have been also investigated that exploits the bandwidth supplied by optical interconnects and processing versatility provided by electronics in OCULAR-II. Owing to the pipelined structure of OCULAR-II, applications can efficiently be executed, especially parallel image processing, signal processing, matrix computations, and data base search.
The processing layer consists of electronic and optoelectronic devices: 850nm 8x8 VCSEL array, Si photodetector array, and processing element (PE) array. More inforamation on the reconfigurable optical interconnection is here .
The works has been a collaborative research with Hamamatsu Corporation .
